Mackinac island
Mackinac Island is a beloved summer destination for many Michiganders. Located between Michigan's Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula, the island is known for its natural beauty, historic charm, and unique way of life. Growing up in metro Detroit, my family and I would make the four-hour drive at least once every summer, often traveling there with my Girl Scout troop. We would spend the day biking around the island, enjoying the famous fudge, browsing the shops, and watching the horse-drawn carriages.
One of the things that makes Mackinac Island so special is that motor vehicles are not allowed, except for emergency vehicles. Visitors get around by bicycle, horse-drawn carriage, or on foot, giving the island a timeless feel. A major landmark is the iconic Grand Hotel, which was featured in the classic movie Somewhere in Time. Although I have never stayed there, it's still on my travel bucket list.
As I got older, my friends and I continued visiting the area by camping in Mackinaw City and taking the ferry over to the island for the day. No matter how many times I visit, Mackinac Island always feels like a place frozen in time and remains one of my favorite spots in Michigan.
